Hotel Description

So here’s the thing about the Ethnic Cave Suite – when I first saw the name, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean, “cave suite” in Rhodes Town? But walking up Aischylou Street (it’s this quiet little road just off the main tourist drag), you start to get it. The whole area has this old-world Rhodes vibe where modern meets medieval, and somehow this place captures that perfectly.

The moment you step inside, you realize why they call it a cave suite. It’s not actually carved into rock or anything dramatic like that, but the design has these gorgeous stone archways and curved walls that give you this cozy, almost grotto-like feeling. The rooms have this incredible texture to them – rough-hewn stone mixed with sleek modern touches that actually work together instead of fighting each other. What really got me was the lighting; they’ve figured out how to make it feel intimate without being dark, which is trickier than it sounds. The beds are ridiculously comfortable too – I’m talking sink-right-in comfort after a long day wandering around the Old Town walls.

You know what’s really smart about the location? You’re close enough to hear the buzz from the main squares when things get lively (especially during summer nights when the tavernas stay open late), but Aischylou is tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the constant foot traffic. I could actually sleep with the windows open, which is saying something for Rhodes Town in peak season. The staff genuinely knows the area – not just the obvious tourist spots but the little bakery that opens at 6 AM for fresh tyropita, or which entrance to the Palace of the Grand Masters has the shortest line. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, none of that overly formal hotel theater that makes you feel like you’re interrupting someone’s day.

Honestly, with a 9.1 rating, I was expecting maybe some hidden drawbacks, but the place really delivers on what it promises. The only thing I’d mention is that if you’re looking for a typical hotel experience with a big lobby and room service, this isn’t that – it’s more like staying in a beautifully designed private residence that happens to be professionally run. The showers have excellent pressure (trust me, this matters after climbing around medieval fortifications all day), and there’s actually decent storage space, which a lot of boutique places seem to forget about. If you’re the type who likes unique accommodations that feel connected to where you’re staying rather than some generic luxury box, the Ethnic Cave Suite hits that sweet spot between character and comfort.

Simon is an immensely considerate and helpful host who has a lovely quirky cave-like property. Clever use of a fairly small place and even includes a jacuzzi and a huge tv connected to Netflix.
Great location inside the Old Town and very near to the centre. Any problems were quickly resolved by Simon

What could be improved: It was great for us as it is situated in a quiet part of the old town so no real negatives but I guess some folk would find the space a bit restrictive.

I was met by the host who took me to the accommodation, and showed me in. However on arrival he informed me that the lock on the front door had a problem, and assured me that he’d have it fixed that afternoon, but he did not show up until after 8pm, by which time I must have fallen asleep, since I’d been up from 4am, so asked him to come back the following day. The apartment was surprisingly noisy with a constant stream of passersby, motor bikes and neighbours arguing loudly, phones ringing, and a noisy restaurant next door.
As a single female traveller I felt somewhat uncomfortable with the door not only opening directly onto the alley, but also uncertain that it was securely locked, so put my luggage against the door, downed the complimentary bottle of tsipouro, passed out and headed home the following day!
The apartment though compact was quaint and quirky, with Asian inspired decor. However with water a precious commodity on some Greek islands I found the very large spa bath an unnecessary extravagance, and sacrificed a lot of space in the compact surroundings to the detriment of the shower….great for a long hot soak after a day ski-ing in the Swiss alps! After a day in the sun at the beach would have much preferred a more spacious shower with rain head to cool off under!
The modern aluminium door with a large pane of glass offered little to no privacy, and not at all in keeping with its medieval surroundings.
Unfortunately the apartment did not live up to my expectations, and thought better use could have been made of the space. The rocky outcrops which took up a large part of the space were all fake, made from concrete and even with poor lighting the plants adorning the rockery were very obviously fake too!!
