I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Sokrates Studios in Afandou, I wasn’t expecting much from the name alone. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked right behind Afandou Beach (the locals just call it that, even though the signs say “Afantou”), and I mean literally a two-minute walk to the sand. You know what’s great about this spot? It’s far enough from Rhodes Town that you’re not dealing with cruise ship crowds, but close enough that you can still hop on the local bus if you want to explore – the stop’s right there on the main road.

The studios themselves are honestly better than half the “boutique” places I’ve stayed at. They’ve got this clean, minimalist thing going on that actually works – white walls, decent-sized balconies, and kitchenettes that aren’t just for show. I mean, you can actually cook a proper meal if you want to, which is huge when you’re staying more than a couple nights. The air conditioning is solid (trust me, you’ll need it in July), and the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every five minutes like some places on the island. What really got me was the attention to detail – fresh towels that actually smell clean, a shower with proper water pressure, and beds that don’t feel like cardboard. The cleaning staff comes through regularly without being intrusive, which is honestly a skill.

Here’s the thing about Afandou that most people don’t realize – it’s where a lot of Greeks actually vacation. The beach is this gorgeous stretch of pebbles and sand that goes on forever, and because it’s not in every guidebook, you can find a quiet spot even in peak season. There’s a handful of tavernas within walking distance where the fish is legitimately fresh (not frozen and shipped from Athens), and the prices are what you’d expect to pay, not tourist markup. The hotel’s owner – I think his name was Dimitris – actually gave me solid recommendations for where to eat and which parts of the beach are best for swimming versus just lounging. You can rent loungers and umbrellas right on the beach, but honestly, the free spots are just as good if you bring your own setup.

The only minor thing I’d mention is that you definitely need a car or scooter if you want to explore the island properly. But parking’s easy here – unlike Rhodes Old Town where it’s a nightmare – and the main coastal road connects you to pretty much everywhere you’d want to go. I ended up extending my stay by three days because the whole vibe was just… relaxed, you know? That 8.9 rating isn’t just inflated booking site nonsense – this place actually delivers what it promises without trying to be something it’s not.

  Super clean, autonomous room, with small kitchen to cook if needed. Looked brand new with great aesthetics. Everyone were friendly and happy to help, felt like home despite it was for one night only.

  Everything was perfect! The host, the location, the place. There was nothing I could point a finger and say I did not like.They have a relaxing place, with a beautiful garden, close to the beach and mini market. There is a restaurant nearby called Fresko, delicious meals and great service too. I definitely will come again.

  Nespresso coffee maker in the room! Very clean, quite large, and very well equipped for the money.
  
  What could be improved: The only problem is the location: it’s in the middle of nowhere and the sea is not visible even from sea-view rooms just because there are quite a lot of other objects in-between.

  Absolutely happy with my choice for vacation! Sokrates studios is run by a lovely family and they take care of everything you need. Everyday the breakfast supplies were delivered to the room so we had everything we need. The room was clean and neat – very good design and equipment, we had everything in there including wine glasses. My room looked exactly like its property photos on Booking, which is cool.
  The hotel is very close to the sea, like 3 min to the nice beach. and then there's a line of beaches so you can just walk by the seaside and try them all))
