So, I stumbled upon Platanos House in Salakos completely by accident – was actually looking for something closer to Lindos but honestly? Best mistake I made on that trip. This place sits right in the heart of Salakos village, and I mean literally under the plane trees (platanos means plane tree, which you’ll figure out pretty quickly when you see the massive canopy overhead). The whole setup feels like someone’s stylish Greek uncle decided to turn his family home into the kind of place where you’d actually want to stay.

The jacuzzi thing isn’t just marketing fluff, by the way – it’s this gorgeous setup on what I’d call a terrace, though terrace makes it sound fancier than it is. You’re basically soaking in hot water while looking out over the village and those incredible hills that make this part of Rhodes feel completely different from the beach madness down south. What really got me was how quiet it gets at night; you know that perfect Mediterranean silence where you can actually hear the cicadas? That. The owners (lovely couple, she speaks perfect English, he’s always tinkering with something to make the place better) mentioned that Salakos used to be where the wealthy Rhodians would escape summer heat, and sitting there at sunset, you totally get why.

Here’s what nobody tells you about staying inland like this – you’re maybe twenty minutes from Kameiros beach, which is criminally underrated, and the drive through those pine forests is gorgeous. Plus, parking is never an issue, unlike… well, everywhere else on the island in summer. The village itself has this one taverna (Platanos, same name, different place) where locals actually eat, not just tourists, and there’s a little kafeneion where old guys play backgammon all afternoon. I mean, it’s not buzzing nightlife, but if you want authentic Greek island life without the cruise ship crowds, this is it. The house itself feels more like staying with friends than a hotel – everything’s spotless, the bed was actually comfortable (you know how hit-or-miss that can be), and they stock the fridge with local products. Oh, and the shower pressure is fantastic, which honestly matters more than you think after a day exploring ancient sites.

  really nice house in a cute village. Was very clean and just overall a very nice place with everything you need. Salakos the village is cute but is a little far away, if you rented a car however like we did it was perfect and we enjoyed coming back to it every day.

  I am very glad I chose this accommodation. The reason for my trip to Rhodes was to find quieter areas close to nature, and it was a perfect base for this. The village of Salakos is an easy 30 minute drive from Rodos Airport, and situated below the magnificent, wooded mountain ridge of Profitis Ilias. I visited in early April when the woods are full of Cyclamen, Anemones and Orchids. There is a path from the village up the mountain if you are reasonably fit – and having the jacuzzi to soak in afterwards is a perfect reward. The ancient ruins of Kamiros are just 20 minutes by car – as is the highest mountain Attaviros and the small town of Embonas (great for local wine!). The apartment was very clean with everything I needed – including a sandwich toaster and washing machine. The venerable Plane Tree (Platanos) that gives the apartment its name is amazing. The hosts responded quickly to the few questions I had, but otherwise left me in peace.
  
  What could be improved: What didn't I like? Having to leave! Maybe it would not be appreciated by those after a town with more shops and restaurants, but for me it was ideal.
