Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to La Residenzia on Kokkinoagrimos Street – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet residential area of Afantou that most tourists never even see. But you know what? That’s exactly what makes this place special. While everyone else is fighting for beach chairs in Rhodes Town, you’re actually living like a local here, and the staff treats you more like a neighbor than just another booking number.

The thing about Afantou is that it’s got this authentic Greek village vibe that hasn’t been completely touristified yet – you’ll hear roosters in the morning (fair warning if you’re a light sleeper), and there’s this little bakery about a five-minute walk down the street where the owner, Maria, will remember your coffee order by day three. La Residenzia sits right in the sweet spot where you can walk to the beach in about ten minutes, but you’re far enough from the main strip that you won’t have drunk British lads singing football chants under your window at 2 AM. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully Greek – not the generic Mediterranean decor you see everywhere, but actual character with those thick stone walls that keep things cool even when it’s blazing outside. Parking’s never an issue here (trust me, in Rhodes that’s a big deal), and the family running the place – well, they’ve got that rare gift of being helpful without hovering.

What really sold me on this place, though, was realizing how perfectly positioned it is for exploring the real Rhodes. You’re literally fifteen minutes from Anthony Quinn Bay if you’ve got a rental car, and the local bus stop is right there if you don’t. The beach at Afantou itself is this gorgeous stretch of pebbles and sand that’s never crowded because most package tourists can’t be bothered to venture this far out – their loss, honestly. After spending a week here, I started to understand why some guests come back year after year. It’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but there’s something deeply satisfying about staying somewhere that feels genuine. The kind of place where you’ll end up chatting with the owner’s cat on the terrace while planning tomorrow’s adventures, and somehow that becomes one of your favorite vacation memories.
