Hotel Description

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Chateau Anax — I mean, boutique hotels can be hit or miss, you know? But this little gem on Antiothiou Street actually surprised me. It’s tucked right in the heart of Rhodes Old Town, which sounds potentially nightmarish for noise, but they’ve somehow managed to create this quiet bubble. The building itself has that weathered stone charm that makes you feel like you’re staying in someone’s renovated ancestral home rather than just another hotel.

What really got me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. The guy at reception (I think his name was Dimitris?) didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map — he marked specific spots where locals grab coffee in the morning and warned me that the cobblestones get slippery near Hippocrates Square when it rains. Small stuff, but it matters when you’re trying to navigate those winding medieval streets at 7 AM looking for decent espresso. The rooms themselves are comfortable without being fussy — clean lines, good air conditioning (crucial in summer), and windows that actually open, which is rarer than you’d think. I was on the second floor facing the interior courtyard, so it stayed pretty quiet even when the tavernas got lively later in the evening.

You know what really sold me on this place? It’s maybe a three-minute walk to the Palace of the Grand Master, but far enough from the main tourist drag that you’re not fighting cruise ship crowds every time you leave. Plus, there’s this tiny bakery called Takis just around the corner — not mentioned in any guidebooks I saw — where locals line up for fresh tyropita in the mornings. The hotel’s location puts you right in the mix of actual Rhodes life, not just the postcard version. Parking can be tricky (like everywhere in the Old Town), but they’ll sort you out with directions to the closest spots, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need a car anyway. The whole medieval city is your backyard, and the new town with its beaches and marina is an easy 10-minute walk. For what you get — that authentic Rhodes experience without sacrificing comfort — it’s actually pretty solid value, especially if you book outside peak summer season.

Reviews

  • Dee from United Kingdom – 14 June 2025 (8/10)

Location was great. Decor good. Bedding good quality.

What could be improved: The bathroom gave little privacy and doors felt not fitted securely. Loo seat very loo.

  • Claire from United Kingdom – 6 June 2025 (9/10)

The room was lovely, very clean and in a great location in the old town. Lots of nearby restaurants and walking distance from shops and historical attractions.

  • Comino from Australia – 22 May 2025 (9/10)

Everything. Spacious, clean, well located, quiet part of old town.

What could be improved: Getting there! Cars are only allowed in before 9. Arriving after that you get dumped at San Francisco Gate and have to walk with suitcases over rocky/stoney paths. AWFUL! Apparently there are golf carts offering to take you there, but 1/ noone told us and 2/we didn't see any at that gate.

  • John from United Kingdom – 11 May 2025 (9/10)

Beautiful historic building in a great location.

What could be improved: Problem with air conditioning which was reported on the first evening and not followed up or rectified.
Also safe door locked open which was also reported on the first night and not followed up or rectified,

  • Kirsty from United Kingdom – 4 May 2025 (9/10)

Beautifully appointed with nice touches such as kettle, teas and coffee, dressing gown and slippers. Extra blankets.

What could be improved: Tricky to find down narrow cobbled lane from main drag. Also a bit disconcerting that main door locked and no response when I rang the bell. I had arrived at the time I’d said I would. I messaged via Booking.com and thankfully got an immediate response from Cris who arrived after a few minutes to let me in. Good directions would have helped plus instructions to call him when I arrived. If someone was not very confident, these difficulties might have been a major issue for them.

  • Jonathan from Canada – 1 May 2025 (9/10)

This was an absolutely stunning renovation of a historic property, it was clean and comfortable, and beautiful. Not much more you could really ask for. Staff were accommodating in transporting us to and from. But the flat itself, the beautiful features, and the gorgeous huge patio looking out onto a beautiful square were the real stars of the show. Really memorable.

What could be improved: Not really anything wrong. There were noisy clubs and people nearby on Saturday night, but the soundproofing was pretty good so you couldn't hear much.

  • Lyn from United Kingdom – 8 April 2025 (9/10)

The room was beautifully appointed- very comfortable bed, coffee machine, good lighting and shower area, lovely stonework inside and out with spacious verandah. A complimentary bottle of wine was a nice touch. The Greek lady who lives in the back was very sweet and waved us off down the street when we left. It is such a central location – 3 mins to some restaurants – yet very quiet at night as a lot of places were still to open

What could be improved: There was a misunderstanding re our arrival as I seemed to have the overall tour operators’s number rather than the host’s. We were therefore standing outside in a storm(literally) for 45 mins. The bell didn’t work but eventually my husband beat the door so hard that the lady in the back heard him.
The host was apologetic when he arrived but did admit he could see our flight had arrived on time and as he knew we were getting a taxi, I’m not sure why he didn’t come round to see what had happened.
He said he would organise something for the next day as compensation- we never heard from him again.
When we messaged at 10.30AM on Sunday regarding check out on Monday,it was 6 hours before he replied. Hardly hotel standard service. Such a shame….we thought the property was really superb but this put a bit of a dampener on our stay.

  • Lenihan from United Kingdom – 5 April 2025 (9/10)

I loved this property! It was beautifully designed, clean and well located. It felt extremely safe as a solo female traveller. Stefanos was so wonderful 🙂

  • Eleni from Australia – 2 December 2024 (9/10)

Clean and tidy and as displayed in pictures. The yia yia who owns the property with her grandkids is a gem. She was so sweet, she served us a morning tea one day. She told us about her life and was as eager to know about my heritage. She was truly very sweet.

What could be improved: Very difficult to get to when dropped at top of old town- struggled moving suitcase over pebbled path. Best to suggest people are dropped at port side to walk up- as path is smoother.

  • Fiona from Ireland – 1 November 2024 (9/10)

    everything

What could be improved: the lady who brought us to the hotel wasn't at all helpful
