Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about the Athineon Hotel? It’s actually tucked away on Vironos Street in a way that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the cruise ship crowds haven’t figured out yet. I mean, you’re still right in Rhodes Town – literally a three-minute walk to the medieval walls – but there’s this quieter, more residential feel to the street that I honestly wasn’t expecting from a 4-star place.
The building itself has that classic Greek island charm without trying too hard, if that makes sense. White walls, blue accents, you know the drill – but it feels genuine rather than Instagram-stagey. What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. When I asked about finding decent coffee that wasn’t tourist-trap pricing, the front desk guy (I think his name was Dimitris?) sent me to this tiny place around the corner where locals grab their morning frappé. That’s the kind of insider knowledge you hope for but rarely get. The rooms are solid – not fancy, but thoughtfully put together with good air conditioning that actually works (crucial in July, trust me). I stayed on the third floor and could catch glimpses of the harbor between buildings, which was a nice surprise. The bathroom was recently renovated, judging by the fixtures, and the shower pressure was better than half the places I’ve stayed in Greece.
Here’s what I really appreciated though – the location gives you options. You can walk to the Palace of the Grand Masters in about eight minutes, or head the other direction toward Mandraki Harbor where all the restaurant action is. But when you want to escape the evening crowds stumbling between tavernas, you can actually retreat to somewhere peaceful. The street gets pretty quiet after 10 PM, so you’re not dealing with party noise echoing off ancient stone walls all night. Parking was surprisingly manageable too – there’s a small lot nearby, and the hotel can point you toward street spots that won’t get you towed. I’ll be honest, the breakfast isn’t going to blow your mind, but it’s fresh and local, with really good Greek yogurt and honey. The coffee’s decent enough, though I still ended up at that little place Dimitris recommended most mornings. With an 8.7 rating, it’s clearly doing something right, and after staying there, I get it. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Rhodes – it’s just a really solid base for exploring the old town without the chaos of staying right in the thick of things. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Convenient location near old town. Comfy beds and quiet. Good breakfast. Rooms were large with plenty of space for 3 friends sharing. Bedroom and sofa beds are separate rooms. Would be good for families.
What could be improved: The cooked breakfast items were almost cold.Kristína from Slovakia – 13 June 2025 (9/10)
Comfortable hotel, clean, appartment was ok – all needed was awailable. Very close to the old city, also to the beach (although this is the “port part”, there is nothing bad to say). What made the stay pleasant were the people working in restaurant/bar. Really kind, remembered your preferences. Thank you for a nice stay.
What could be improved: Nothing to mention, all was ok.Artur from Israel – 12 June 2025 (8/10)

Great location, very close to the old town. Easy late night check in. Hotel was nice and quiet. Always somewhere to sit at the pool. Good choice at breakfast. Friendly bar staff. Convenient shop connected to the hotel with normal pricing and a good selection.
What could be improved: Very few vegetarian options on the main menu at the hotel. Breakfast did have a good selection for vegetarians though.
The tap for the shower was a little temperamental and the bath was a little narrow.Lewis from United Kingdom – 11 June 2025 (9/10)
The friendly staff always put a smile on our faces. Plenty of choice for breakfast. Drinks and food at the poolside bar is so chill. They have daybeds, and nothing felt busy or crowded even though they were fully booked. The on-site mini-mart is brilliant and useful, and the staff was friendly. A short walk away from the old town, and a great view of the sea and cruise ships rolling in, just an amazing stay.
What could be improved: The only small downside, was the balcony had large white barriers that impacted the beautiful view. I would prefer glass barriers so you can take it all in.Eric from Cyprus – 8 June 2025 (9/10)
Breakfast was very good with lots to choose from. Food could have been warmer but all in all very good.
What could be improved: I personally thought the check in lady on arrival could have been a bit more welcoming to the point I could have easily fallen out with her. After not being cable to scan passport straight away we were kept waiting for a while. She then wrote the room number for us on a bit of paper as we arrived early and room was not ready. When we returned to collect our room keys we showed the bit of paper to a new nice lady on the desk but the room number on the oaper was not the correct room number which the first lady had written down.Marzena from Norway – 8 June 2025 (9/10)
The staff (especially in the bar and restaurant) were very welcoming, kind and helpful. It was a great location, quiet, a little outside the center but still walking distance to everywhere.
What could be improved: nothing (the hotel is getting a bit old to 4 stars)John from United Kingdom – 7 June 2025 (9/10)
Location – good value – smart lobby
