Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Álas Holiday Home – I mean, there are so many places along the Rhodes coast that promise beachfront bliss but deliver something totally different. But this little gem on Stegna Beach? It actually delivers, and then some. The moment you step out of your car (parking is right there, by the way – no hunting around narrow streets like in some of the more touristy spots), you can hear the waves lapping literally steps away. Stegna isn’t one of those crazy crowded beaches that the tour buses hit – it’s still got that authentic Greek island vibe where you’ll see local families setting up for the day alongside visitors.

What really got me about Álas is how the owners seem to understand what travelers actually need versus what hotels think we want. The rooms have this lived-in comfort that feels more like staying at a well-traveled friend’s place than some sterile hotel room. You know what I mean? Real wooden furniture, not that fake laminate stuff, and the balconies – well, most of them anyway – give you this unobstructed view of the Aegean that changes color throughout the day. I found myself just sitting there with my morning coffee watching the fishing boats head out around sunrise. The air conditioning actually works properly too (crucial in those August afternoons), and there’s this cross-breeze thing happening that keeps everything fresh even when it’s blazing outside.

The location is sort of perfect if you want to explore beyond just lounging on the beach. Archangelos village is maybe a ten-minute drive inland, and that’s where you’ll find the real tavernas – not the touristy ones, but places where the owner’s grandmother is still making the dolmades in the back kitchen. The coastal road toward Lindos is absolutely gorgeous, especially in the early evening when the light hits those white houses just right. I actually preferred staying here over being right in Lindos because you get the best of both worlds – easy access to all the sights but you come home to something peaceful. The staff at Álas seem to get this balance too; they’re incredibly helpful with directions and recommendations (ask about the ceramics workshop in Archangelos – totally worth it), but they’re not hovering around trying to sell you excursions every five minutes. It’s that kind of relaxed hospitality that makes Greek islands special, you know? Plus, Stegna Beach has this long stretch where you can actually walk without bumping into beach chairs every two feet, which becomes pretty precious when you’ve been to some of the more developed spots on Rhodes.
